Having a newborn baby is like having a miracle happening to you and to prevent yourself from getting too panicky, it is always best to read up on some baby advice way in advance so that you are prepared. When your unique little one is born, he will look very small and likes to curl up. This is because he has been curled up in the womb for many months and it will take him a while before he is used to his new surroundings. Therefore, the best way to make him feel comfortable is to wrap him up securely with a big towel. It will give him a sense of security. Over time, he will learn to straighten his little legs and arms.

Do newborns have reflexes? Of course. The first reflex action which you will likely see is the startle reflexes which take place in response to a loud noise. You will see him arch his back, extend and stiffen his arms as well as his legs before letting out a loud cry. This startle reflex action can also happen when he is fast asleep because he is still not used to the brighter environment outside of the womb. However, you do not have to worry too much about it as it will go away after a few months.

You can also see other natural reflexes in your newborn. One of which is the Babinski reflex action which happens when the baby’s big toe bends back and the other toes fan out when the sole of his foot is firmly stroked.  Another one is the step reflex whereby your baby will seem to be making attempts at walking when he is held in an upright position and his feet could touch the floor. As for he tongue-thrust reflex, it is when he pushes his tongue out when something is placed on it. Learning about all these different types of reflex actions is important as you will be prepared when you see your baby doing them and not panic.

When your baby was still in the womb, he has a constant supply of food and is never hungry. However, once he is born, that supply is greatly reduced so he will always be hungry. That’s why a newborn needs to be fed once every two to three hours. It is essential to provide your little one with sufficient nourishment so usually your doctor will advise you to feed your baby once he cries. The good news is, your baby will most likely get used to his feeding routine after about three months or so and will need to be fed less often. If you are unclear about why your baby is crying, you might want to ask your elders at home for some baby advice or better still, consult your doctor.
