Having a new baby in the house is definitely a great joy and one of the most exciting things that you would have to do is naming your newborn with a perfect name. This is a very serious duty of a parent because you have to give your child a name that is to stick with them for the whole of their lives! It is therefore important that you read up some baby advice on the meanings behind the names before you given them to your children.

When you are naming your baby, you need to keep in mind that a name defines a person. Thus, the name you have picked should not just be something that you like, it should also be a very meaningful name. In that way, when your child is older, you will be able to explain to him why you have selected that name. For instance, we spent a lot of time thinking of suitable names for my set of twins. My daughter’s name is ‘Jayleen’ which means ‘victorious’. We picked that name because we want her to be strong, be persistent and be a winner in whatever she does. My son’s name is ‘Julius’ because we want him to be a respectful and honourable man when he grows up.

Alternatively, you can select a name that carries a lot of family history in it, for example, a name that has been passed down in your family from generation to generation. However make sure that you like the name.  If you just wish to honor someone in your family but do not like the name, you can use it as your baby’s middle name instead.

In addition to the above tips, here are some things that you may not have thought about or you should keep in mind.  Rhyming names or names that do sound funny with your last name is not a good idea. Children will use this against them to torment them and make them uncomfortable later on in life.  Be very careful to give your children names that are not easy to make fun of and also make sure that your child’s initials are not going to spell something that may be embarrassing as well. These are all good things that are important to think about first and most of the time they are missed by parents.

It is important that when you are selecting names for your children, consider a name that your child can be proud of. Make sure it is not just a fad name that will go out of style soon as your child has to live with it for life. No matter how much you like a name, ensure first that it is not so common that many people around you have that name. It will not be pleasant for your child if he is sucked into whatever connotations that name has. Bear in mind that naming your child is a very serous duty so you will do well by reading up on any baby naming advice you can lay your hands on first.
